JOB DESCRIPTION 1

The tasks a Dress Maker is expected to perform include:  

  • Stitching together parts of women's garments

  • Stitching together parts by hand and/or machine   

  • Inserting inner lining material

  • Undertaking embroidery work, button hole making, etc.   

  • Attaching lining, lace, buttons, etc.

  • Carrying out alteration as directed   

  • Pressing garments and supervising work of hand sewers

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 1, 2

  • It is a desk job

  • May need to handle a team

  • Local travelling is not a part of the job role 

  • Part-time work and contractual jobs may be available

  • Work from home option is not available

Working hours

  • Organizations usually work for 5/6 days a week for 8/9 hours everyday. This may vary from organization to organization

  • Shift system may be available

  • Overtime may be required

  • Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, the working hours and days will be flexible

  • Understanding dress design and construction

  • Efficient in removing stitches from garments to be altered using rippers or razor blades

  • Ability to estimate garment cost

  • Well-versed with taking measurements for different patterns

  • Proficiency in operating sewing machine

  • Knowledge of sewing techniques

  • Well-versed with cutting and trimming of garments

  • Basic knowledge of latest trends in dress designs
